Wimbledon 2011 will be the 125th time that The All England Lawn Tennis Club will have hosted The Championships since the first tournament in 1877.
The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen's Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.
There were no Championships held between 1915-1918 and 1940-1945 due to the First World War and Second World War.
What's going on at Wimbledon
In celebration of the 125th Championships, Wimbledon will be opening its doors to several events.
1. The BBC will be filming Antiques Roadshow at the All England Club on 25 August 2011, for broadcast in September/October 2011.
2. BBC Blue Peter Special - programme featuring Wimbledon past, present and future to be broadcast on the second Monday of The Championships.
3. Four 30-minute documentaries telling the history behind the 125 Championships.
4. New exhibition in the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum - The Queue .
5. A range of licensed merchandise featuring the 125th logo available in the Wimbledon Shops .
6. Official Suppliers: • Polo Ralph Lauren – new Ball Boy and Girl uniform featuring the 125th logo. • Fila - special shoe with the 125th logo and the words ‘125 Years’ embroidered on the heel. • Slazenger – Championship ball with ‘125 Years’ stamped onto the cloth and special can design with the 125th logo. • Lanson - 125th logo on the Champagne bottle neck labels served at Wimbledon.
7. Community Art project. Over the last few months the Education Department have been working with several local schools and groups on a community art project that celebrates the 125th Championships. Each participant was given one of 125 wooden, unstrung, unfinished racket frames and asked to interpret it in a medium of their choosing to reflect The Championships. Many of the rackets will be exhibited in the windows of businesses in Wimbledon Village for the duration of this year’s tournament, while others will be displayed in suitable locations around the grounds.
